The Hunger Games

Sooo, I'm sure we've all heard about the book The Hunger Games by Suzanna Collins, especially since the movie just came out. Like seriously... EVERYONE knows about it now. I actually just bought the series just because I wanted to watch the movie and for some reason, before watching any movie- I have to read the book first.. yeah I'm a nerd like that.

This book is addictive! I used to be like vampire obsessed and crazy about Twilight... but this book like legit replaced vampires in my heart. Lol it took me less than a day to finish this book and like in case it isn't already obvious enough, I LOVEDDDD this book.

Taylor Swift actually got a signed copy of the first book from Suzaane Collins for like 2 of her songs that I believe are a part of the soundtrack for the movie... grrr I’m so jealous >.<

At first, I didn’t even know what The Hunger Games was about, I just heard about it because it’s super popular now. It was on my imaginary list of books to read but I never got to it until the day before the movie was in theatres. It’s been compared to Twilight a lot so I was kinda expecting vampires to be everywhere... I really don’t know what I was expecting. But I found that this book definitely explains the storyline amazingly well. Before any “Twihards” get their hopes up, this book is completely unrelated to vampires... I actually think that I’m the only person who was expecting vampires.

This book is about a 16 year old girl named Katniss Everdeen who lives in District 12. Panem is the “shining Capitol” surrounded by 12 districts which I sorta think of as like... provinces or states or cities... so basically the Capitol is the ... well Capitol of the country and it takes place in the future in the ruins of North America. And every year, as sorta like a reminder and annual punishment because of the war the rebellions started and the Capitol won, each district draws a boy and a girl from ages 12-18 to be tributes in the Hunger Games. This year will be the 74th Hunger Game.

So when you’re 12 you enter your name once and when your 13 twice and when you’re 14, 3 times and so on until you’re 18. Or you could enter for tesserae for grain and oil and that’s like when you put your name in an extra time to get tesserae that’s enough for one person. For example, Katniss is 16 so it’s mandatory that she enters her name 5 times... but because she has a house hold of 3 to take care of she enters her name 20 times to have enough tesserae for herself, her mom, and her sister (Primrose).

When Prim is drawn to be the girl tribute from district 12, Katniss volunteers to take her place.  She and Peeta Mellark (the boy tribute from district 12) are taken to the capitol to train for I believe 2 weeks to fight to death in an arena on live TV. While she’s saying goodbye to her friends and family, Madge, the mayor’s daughter and probably her only friends besides Gale who’s her best friend, gives her a golden pin of a mockingjay for good luck. A mockingjay is a mix of a jabberjay (a mutant bird that the Capitol created to eavesdrop on the rebels that we’re like.. failures beause the rebels caught on and gave the jabberjays false info) and mockingbirds.  Only one tribute will be left standing and they’ll be named a victor. When you become a victor... ur like a celebrity, and you get like loads of money and other privileges.

Now I don’t wanna like spoil the whole entire story but I’m tempted to :/ ... but I hope you guys get a good enough idea of what this book is about.

I’m like in love with Peeta now! And btw he’s in love with Katniss <3 awwe I have to spoil just this one little part...  on the first day of Kindergarten when Katniss sang in front of the class, her voice was apparently so beautiful that even the birds stopped to listen and that’s when he knew he was a goner. And then this other time when she was 11, he gave her hope. So she was like starving and she’s sitting like outside of the bakery after being told to stop digging out of the trash by the baker’s wife.. and Peeta comes out after being yelled at and beaten by his mom (who’s a real b*tch) for burning bread. And he’s supposed to give the bread to their pet pigs but instead he gives them to her (BECAUSE HE LOVES HER!) Hmmm I feel like a crazy fan-girl... which I am. But you can’t blame me cuz this book was just so adorable.

I highly recommend this book if you wanna read about like romance that’s unrelated to vampires... cuz u know, now a days, everything is about vampires. It’s like a mix of romance and adventure. I love this book, you can get the whole trilogy from Chapters or any other book star but I got mine from Costco cuz it’s like $15 cheaper there. Or of course, you could get it from the library but I bet there’s a long waiting list of people who wanna read this book.

I hope you found this review helpful and I hope you decide to read this book J
